The Bulldog Trust was established in 1983 by Richard Hoare and exists to generate notable support for other selected charities. It started modestly but is now well established with donations totalling in excess of £3,000,000 since its foundation and regular annual contributions of more than £200,000.
Most of the pledges, apart from major projects, go towards educational grants, including a theatrical fund. Major support has gone to such diverse beneficiaries as Hampshire Hospices, MERLIN (International Medical Relief), The Princes Trust and The National Playing Fields Association. Its primary contribution has not just been financial but as a catalyst for change within the charities that it supports, challenging people's traditional thinking and encouraging them to refocus as circumstances change.
The strength of the Bulldog Trust lies in the care with which it evaluates potential recipients and its ability to give considerable operational advice and assistance with the expectation of additional benefits being derived from its larger donations.
In the past The Bulldog Trust has not solicited for contributions towards its own funds but it does perceive a role in facilitating substantial charitable donations and the establishment of charitable trusts by individuals. Recent changes in the law have created considerable opportunities, particularly involving the gift of shares.
The Trust is based at 2 Temple Place. The building was purchased in the autumn of 1999 and is designed to raise the profile of the Trust, generate some additional funds for distribution and in the longer term utilise surplus office space to develop a charity support centre.
The Bulldog Trust regrets it is unable to award grants to individuals or unsolicited applications.
