THE COUNCIL CHAMBER

The fine joinery of Moos is to be seen at its best in the Council Chamber.

The Middle Temple Library causing some obstruction of light, the panelling is of satin woods. There is only one other plaster ceiling in the building, and that is gilded. One side of the Chamber is filled with bookcases, the room having been Lord Astor's Library.

Above the bookcases and the mahogany door are a number of panels modelled by Frith in low relief, and between them finely carved figures representing the Arts and Sciences. A concealed panel gives access to the Great Hall.

2002 footnote: Now known as The Library, this room was severely damaged by a wartime bomb (right) which resulted in the irreplaceable loss of the coved and panelled plaster ceiling; Frith's white statuary marble chimneypiece is now kept at Cliveden.
